Who We Are
Dilmah was founded by master teamaker Merrill J Fernando on a lifelong passion to share the finest Ceylon tea with the world while making business a matter of human service. Today, his sons Dilhan & Malik, and the next generation of the Fernando family continue this legacy, remaining true to the values that have guided us from the beginning; authenticity, quality and kindness to the craft of tea, the people and the nation that nurture it. As the world’s first producer-owned tea brand, Dilmah pioneered Single Origin Tea in 1985, bringing tea that is picked, perfected and packed at source, empowering Sri Lankan tea growers while preserving the character of our island’s finest gardens.

For Merrill J. Fernando, tea was more than just a commodity; it was a way to serve humanity. He wanted to bring a cup of tea that wasn't just healthy and delicious, but also ethically sound. The vision was to create a business that was a matter of human service. This philosophy continues to guide everything we do today, through our MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation.
The Company has remained true to its Founder, Merrill J. Fernando’s vision of making business a matter of human service, and understand the Company’s most invaluable assets are its people. The Company pursues its commitment towards sustainability through balancing economic success, environmental preservation, and social responsibility, which is reflected through the Company’s key pillars of Taste, Goodness and Purpose. A significant portion of the Group’s profits are directed every year towards supporting the humanitarian and environmental initiatives of Dilmah Conservation and the MJF Charitable Foundation
